Framed print: image 4-3/8 x 7", archival mat with silver-gilt wood frame, 10-7/16 x 13-9/16". Fine. The Winslow Homer engravings which appeared in HARPER'S generally depicted aspects of contemporary 19th century life. Those commissioned by THE GALAXY, in contrast, illustrated novels serialized by the journal. "Weary and Dissatisfied with Everything" accompanied Annie Edwards' "Susan Fielding", Annie Edwards (ca. 1830-1896), an English novelist, published some 21 titles between 1858 and 1899. THE FEMINIST COMPANION records that she often portrayed "unworthy society men and frank young women". SUSAN FIELDING ran in THE GALAXY from September to December, 1869 with a Winslow Homer illustration accompanying each installation. Certainly Homer's work for THE GALAXY is in mark contrast to that for HARPER'S or OUR YOUNG FOLKS. Art critic Philip Beam notes that here Homer "imbued his work with the somber overtones of the late Victorian novel as it perpetuated the sentiments and emotions of lingering romanticism". A handsome example. Beam, Philip, WINSLOW HOMER'S MAGAZINE ENGRAVINGS, 163. THE FEMINIST COMPANION, p. 331.
