Christmas Card: "Magistri et Discipuli" ["How Praise a World That May Not Last"]

[Falls Village, Conn.?]: Mark and Dorothy Van Doran, [ca. 1971]. Poet Mark and Dorothy Van Doren's 1971 Christmas card, signed "Best to you all / Ñ D / Ñ M" at the inside cover. Christmas card: 7 x 5-1/4", <4> pp; stiff bright red card stock printed in white. Accompanying manilla envelope bears the inscription, "Mark Van Doren / Xmas poem / of 1971"/ Fine. At the front is printed, "Magistri et Discipuli / Collegii Sancti Johannis / Pacem in Terris Optant / Inter Hominies Bonae Voluntatis" and then "Christmas 1971". At the interior is printed "How praise a world that will not be / Forever?" over Van Doren's name. At the rear cover is printed: "Merry Christmas / and Happy New Year / Dorothy and Mark Van Doren" and then "The poem on the cover was written in honor of / the 275 th anniversary of St. John's College". Van Doren delivered a speech on the anniversary of St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico on August 8, 1971, which Lightning Tree published in 1977. This Christmas card may be the first printing of the poem. Mark and Dorothy Van Doren did a number of Christmas cards with his poems over the years. This was their last. The poet died in 1972.
